Meditation retreat with Ajahn Nyanarato

2005-Ajahn-Nyanarato-norte

July 9-14, at Ķoņu pamatskola (see map), Valmiera disctrict, Latvia

We are pleased to invite you to take part in a meditation retreat conducted by the Venerable Ajahn Nyanarato. The retreat offers an opportunity to put down daily work, commitments and stresses for a short time, and create the space and environment to reflect inwardly and to listen to daily Dhamma teachings. The retreat includes periods of sitting and walking meditation as well as traditional exercises that cultivate mindfulness. Retreatants are to observe noble silence throughout the retreat, although there will be time for questions and answers with the teacher. The daily schedule includes periods of group and individual practice as well as breakfast, lunch, evening tee and some free time.

It may seem challenging, but the retreat can become a turning point which enriches ones life.

Ajahn Nyanarato

The teacher

Venerable Ajahn Nyanarato is a bikkhu (a Buddhist monk) in the Thai forest tradition. Having ordained in Thailand in 1986 he has lived the renunciate meditation life for 29 years under guidance of renowned meditation masters, particularly Ajahn Sumedho. His sincere and gentle way of expounding the Buddha’s teaching will help a beginner to make first steps in mindfulness practice and provide an opportunity for seasoned mediators to deepen their understanding of reality. Rules of the retreat

The retreat will be conducted in a traditional form of Theravada Buddhism – away from busyness of everyday life and in Noble silence. In this retreat we will:

  • observe the Noble silence i.e., refrain from communication of any kind (talking, whispering, gesturing etc.). The rule does not apply to communication with the teacher or retreat managers. Refraining from communication will protect the meditation practice from unnecessary disturbances and help to cultivate inner peace;
  • stay at the retreat centre until the end of the retreat  (July 14th 11.30 a.m.);
  • observe the retreat schedule;
  • turn of mobile phones and other electronic devices and hand them to retreat managers for safekeeping till the end of the retreat. This rule has no exceptions. If you feel you need an alarm clock, please bring an alarm clock along with you. However, if you think someone may need to contact you in an emergency, please give them our contact details. We can take a message and pass it on to you.
  • dress discreetly and abstain from wearing sleeveless tee-shirts, tight-fitting clothing, shorts or skirts which end above the knees. it is advisable to wear comfortable clothes that cover shoulders and knees.
  • observe 8 precepts:

1. Harmlessness: not intentionally taking the life of any living creature.

2. Trustworthiness: not taking anything that is not offered.

3. Chastity: refraining from any sexual activity.

4. Right Speech: avoiding false, abusive or malicious speech and idle chatter, and, on retreat, keeping Noble Silence.

5. Sobriety: not taking any intoxicating drinks or drugs that lead to carelessness.

6. Renunciation: not eating after mid-day.

7. Restraint: not wearing make-up, perfume, jewellery or immodest clothing; not texting, emailing, making telephone calls or using the internet; not playing or listening to music, or watching TV.

8. Alertness: refraining from overindulgence in sleep.

These precepts and in particular observance of the Noble silence are integral parts of the retreat which help to quite the mind, to be aware and to experience the ‘here and now’. Therefore we request that out of kindness for yourself and other meditators you would follow these rules.
